LEWIS COUNTY- State officials have confirmed that a child in Lewis County has died after contracting Measles.

Authorities are saying this is the first known Measles associated death in New York State in over three-decades (thirty-years).

Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement Monday evening expressing her condolences and how she is “heartbroken to learn that a child in Lewis County has died after contracting Measles.”

A few weeks ago, Lewis County Public Health officials began sounding the alarm over a small cluster of Measles cases that popped up locally.

Health officials say Measles is a very contagious illness that can cause serious health complications and even death, especially for those who are most vulnerable, including children.

Public health officials iterated how the risk of Measles is very low for those who have already been vaccinated.
