ALBANY, NY- Believe it or not, it is technically illegal to cheat on your spouse in New York State, thanks to an adultery law that’s been on the books since the early 1900’s.
On the other hand, there is a bill circulating now in the legislature that, if passed and signed, would repeal this law, which seldom results in any sort of charges or convictions in the first place.
This update is according to the latest from the Associated Press.
It’s reported that adultery laws, which are still on the books across other states as well, were designed and enacted to reduce the number of divorces during a time when cheating on your spouse was the only method in securing what was marked as a legal split.
According to state officials, the proposed measure has already passed through the Assembly and is expected to pass through the Senate before arriving to Governor Hochul’s Office for a signature.
