ILION- Remington Arms is preparing to depart from the Mohawk Valley next month and consolidate its operations in the state of Georgia.

With a legacy that began in Ilion, NY back in 1816, several communities in the Mohawk Valley and beyond are preparing to witness the end of an era come early March.

Remington Arms is the nation’s oldest manufacturer of firearms and company officials are citing steep costs to keep the historic plant up and running.

Company representatives told the Associated Press that Georgia is more accommodating to the firearms industry.

A workforce, once consisting of approximately 1,300 employees, has dwindled away over the past decade in the wake of bankruptcy filings and the lawsuit filed after the Sandy Hook school massacre.

It’s reported that local officials are hoping the iconic plant can someday serve as a host to other manufacturing companies, or potential retail and residential housing.

Reports suggest the property was listed for sale last month for $10 million.
