Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is digging his heels in by defending decisions he and his administration made during the COVID-19 pandemic, to which some have become controversial.
The former Governor appeared Tuesday for a Congressional Subcommittee hearing, focused around certain measures enacted involving the virus and nursing homes while the illness spread before any vaccines and other treatments were available.
According to the Associated Press, the hearing had waves of combativeness, as members of a Republican led House Select Subcommittee released a report prior to Cuomo’s testimony that accused him of staging a cover up to shield mistakes that endangered nursing home residents.
Cuomo snapped back at the committee, claiming their report offered no evidence that supported former President Trump’s claim that “New York’s guidance killed thousands in nursing homes,” the former Governor said.
“In fact, the report finds no casualty whatsoever. Not one death,” Cuomo added.
Cuomo’s administration came under fire after releasing an incomplete overview of nursing home deaths related to COVID, while also including assisted living facilities.
In fact, there were nearly 15,000 actual COVID related deaths in such facilities statewide, which dramatically exceeds the original number disclosed by the Cuomo administration.
He resigned from office in August, 2021 amidst a separate firestorm of sexual harassment allegations, to which this day he still denies.
