Despite efforts, a federal judge has slapped down the efforts to halt New York’s latest issue of gun laws from taking effect Thursday.

Governor Kathy Hochul responded to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision this summer to strike down the state’s century old pistol permitting process by putting forth a new slate of measures she says are aimed to help keep New Yorkers safer.

The law includes restrictions for concealed carry permit holders in places like churches, parks and theaters. It also requires further background checks and firearm safety and live-fire training for individuals seeking to obtain concealed carry permits.

Renewal or recertification for permits will be required every three-years.

"In response to the Supreme Court's decision to strike down New York's century-old concealed carry law, we took swift and thoughtful action to keep New Yorkers safe," Governor Hochul said.

"I refuse to surrender my right as Governor to protect New Yorkers from gun violence or any other form of harm. In New York State, we will continue leading the way forward and implementing common sense gun safety legislation."
