Forestport, surrounding communities say goodbye to WWII Veteran and recipient of a New York State Senate Liberty Medal

Terry Larkin

FORESTPORT- Just about every-single-day. there was an old gentleman who would sit towards the end of the counter for breakfast at Forestport Diner.

David Belliveau, who has owned and operated the renowned local establishment for nearly two-decades, says it was a rare occasion when this old gentleman didn't show up for breakfast. If he wasn't there, someone would be sent around the corner from the diner to his home and check on him.

"I don't care what the weather was, it could be forty-below and snowing that you couldn't see," Mr. Belliveau said as he referred to Terrance Larkin, 101.

"He was still going to put his earmuffs on and come over and have breakfast."

Just last month, Terrance, also known as "Terry," was awarded a New York State Senate Liberty Medal, which commemorated his service to the United States while serving his country in WWII.

Senator Joe Griffo was the one who presented this medal to Mr. Larkin, which is one of the highest civilian honors a New Yorker can receive and is presented to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.

A large crowd was in attendance for this special occasion, which was held at the Forestport Diner.

Terry was known for his humorous small crafts, including knick-knacks like his "Adirondack Flashlight," and "Doughnut Seeds," just to name a few. These are still on display at the Forestport Diner. Images by Brian Trainor.

Mr. Larkin was born on March 11, 1921 and folks around the Forestport community were filled with eager anticipation to have what would have been Larkin's 102nd birthday bash.

"We've been planning parties for him since the last ten-years, you know, making it a big celebration," said Jeannie Wolcott. She was just one of several who 'adopted' Terry in his older age and would look after him.

"His 100th was huge."

Sadly, Terry passed away only one week shy of that milestone. The community has since been mourning his loss.

In a Facebook tribute post on the Forestport, NY Community (Friends) Page, several people left their regards and memories of Terry.

His arrangements are in care of Tranior Funeral Home. His full obituary can be read here.

Speaking for the Forestport and surrounding communities, Wolcott says she hopes she can live the rest of her life like Terry would have - kindness and humor like none other.
