ROME- Four police officers received treatment for fentanyl exposure while investigating the scene of an overdose Thursday afternoon in Oneida County.
It was shortly after 4:30 p.m. when the Sheriff’s Office was called out to the scene of an overdose on the Brown Road, outer district of Rome, NY.
Once on scene, deputies said they located a female victim. EMS assisted by carrying her down a flight of stairs, where additional medical personnel administered treatment before she was taken to the hospital.
It wasn’t long after the victim was transported when four sheriff’s deputies began experiencing symptoms that suggested signs of fentanyl exposure, including severe headaches and dizziness.
One deputy subsequently needed two doses of narcan. Two of the four officers were taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for additional evaluation. Authorities said they were expected to be released.
The other two deputies were treated on scene. An investigation remains ongoing.
