AAA Gas Pump Money

BOONVILLE- On Tuesday, gas prices in the village of Boonville, NY were nearly at $4.70 per-gallon. Just north in Lowville, prices were hovering near $4.60 per-gallon and in Old Forge, NY, gas prices were near $4.90.

Fuel prices have gone up steadily since last-year, but with a sharp increase over the winter in the wake of Russia's invasion of neighboring Ukraine. Even with the state gas tax holiday, prices kept climbing for a time, until finally they began falling last month.

In New York, the average gallon of gas peaked just before summer at over $5, but since has dipped to $4.41 as of this report, while the national average hovers just above $4, according to the AAA

If you've been to neighboring cities or elsewhere in the state or the country, you will have almost certainly noticed significantly cheaper gas prices. Take this for example - a listener reached out to us last week with a report of gas at $4.12 up north in Malone, NY.

Other reports from Gas Buddy indicate that gas prices are as low as $3.82 in Balston Spa and Saratoga area, just outside the State Capitol district of Albany.

In Syracuse, NY, the same sources indicate gas prices just above $4.

People in the North Country have caught on to the fact that they are stuck paying significantly more for a gallon of gas than surrounding areas, and many whom we have spoken to clearly are not happy about it and are demanding why.

We've reached out to and asked numerous local, county, state and even the corporate office for Stewart's Shops - asking why gas prices here in the North Country are so significantly higher than nearby areas, like Syracuse. As of this report, we have yet to receive any sort of answer in return.

"It's aggravating that the prices here in our area are so much higher than other parts of not only our state, but of the country," said Diana Trainor, who - like many - have been feeling the pinch at the pump from stiff gas prices. She has to keep her van filled for all sorts of delivery routes for her floral shop.

"I know it costs me well over two-and-a-half times to fill my van tank for deliveries as it did before."

We will continue searching for answers and we will update with another report when and if those answers develop.
