Interview: Casandra Buell talks round two funding for New York Septic System Replacement Fund Program for Lewis County residents near Beaver River and tributaries

LOWVILLE- If you live along the Beaver River and its tributaries and your septic system might be in need of replacement, there's a program that dishing our a second round of funding that can help cover up to 50% of the costs.

Known as New York's Septic System Replacement Fund Program, the initiative provides funding to replace cesspools and septic systems in New York State. This grant program’s goal is to reduce the environmental and public-health impacts associated with the discharge from cesspools and septic systems.

The program targets cesspools and septic systems in close proximity to priority waterbodies. Failing systems along the Beaver River, Lower tributaries and waterbodies could be eligible for this funding. 

The state is providing Lewis County with funds to work with local property owners. Lewis County will provide grants to reimburse the property owner for up to 50% of the costs (up to a maximum of $10,000) of their eligible septic system project, include:

  • Replacement of a cesspool with a septic system; or
  • Installation, replacement or upgrade of a septic system or septic system components;
  • Installation of enhanced treatment technologies, including an advanced nitrogen removal system.
