CROGHAN- The Great Pumpkin Rail Ride is aimed for Saturday, October 14 at historic Croghan Depot.

"Come find the pumpkin setting on a piece of railroad history," said Croghan Depot Historian Laurie Halliday. "The kids and the big kids, of course, like to find the big pumpkin. We hide a pumpkin, but yet it's kind-of in plain sight."

With speeder car rides down the historic Lowville & Beaver River Railroad, the cost is $5 and individual donation and $10 per-family, which includes a free tour of the historic Croghan Depot.

The event is aimed to run from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Be sure to listen to our latest on-air segment with Laurie Halliday from Thursday, October 5 for more details:

Here is another announcement from the Railway Historical Society of Northern New York:

"The Railway Historical Society in Croghan, NY has exciting news to share! As many of you know there are always restoration projects to do. One of our projects has been the station agent’s apartment in the Croghan Depot. This depot was the living quarters of the Shorland Forney family. This is where the station agent, his wife Pat and kids lived while working at the depot. There were two generations of this family that worked as station agents at the Croghan Depot.

Our railroad library has been growing since our opening in the early 1990’s. Railroad ledgers go as far back as 1893. Maps and other railroad paperwork and memorabilia have been on display for the public. Our collection was running out of room. But thanks to AES we will be able to display more.

The apartment will look like the year the Station Agent’s family lived there in the 1950’s. The apartment had only one bedroom, tiny kitchen and no bathroom. The kid’s beds were on each wall of the living room. The bathroom was downstairs. The station agent’s wood stove downstairs kept this tiny apartment cozy and warm.

AES is a great local partner and the largest renewable energy owner and operator in the state of New York, with a number of solar projects under development in the region. Their projects go beyond powering our grid with clean energy, they build meaningful partnerships in communities and we are grateful to work with them. This company has graciously donated $15,000 toward the restoration of the depot apartment where the station agent and family lived. The area will be used to house our collection of original Lowville Beaver River Railroad paperwork. Come and see it now and again after the restoration. Great work to be done.

Thank you AES for partnering with RHSNNY on this important preservation project. Our Railroad is over 100 years old and is one of the last shortline railroads left in the area. An AES representative will be on site as our guest during our event at the Croghan Depot. The Lowville Beaver River Railroad and depot has been deemed eligible for inclusion in the State and National Historic Register of Historic Places in 2022.

We are located in the Croghan depot 9781 Main Street Croghan, NY. Benefits the Railway Historical Society of Northern NY 501c-3 museum dedicated to preserving the age of the Iron Horse on the Lowville Beaver River Railroad. RHSNNY is a non-profit 501c-3 Educational Museum. Don’t forget to see the 1918 Shay Locomotive!

Come find the pumpkin setting on a piece of railroad history. Then write what it is sitting on, what that railroad object is used for and enter your name into a free drawing. October 14, 2023 from 11 AM to 2 PM The Great Pumpkin Rail ride will happen at the Croghan Depot."
