LCPH: Two animals test positive for rabies in New Bremen and Martinsburg

LEWIS COUNTY- The Public Health Office is reporting a pair of animals that have tested positive for rabies.

In a released update on Tuesday morning, public health officials said that lab tested results confirmed a rabid bat in the town of New Bremen and a rabid raccoon in the town of Martinsburg. 

To clarify, there was no known human or domestic animal contact in both of these cases. 

Rabies is a deadly disease that can transmit to humans from infected animals through a bite or a scratch., according to LCPH.

Public health officials urge residents to never approach a wild animal acting strangely, especially one that is foaming at the mouth or is displaying no signs of fear.
