LOWVILLE- A sex offender from Oregon who had just moved to the North Country area is accused of violating terms for New York’s Sex Offender registry.

Benjamin Robert Schmult, 60, was arrested on Wednesday by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators allege that Schmult, who was a level three sex offender in the state of Oregon, failed to change his address and register his social media accounts.

It’s reported that Schmult moved to the New Bremen area as of May 2, but investigators say that he failed to complete his current 10-year parole sentence prior to re-locating.

To clarify, police say that Schmult did make contact with New York’s registry, but did not do so to be re-assigned a risk level (three is the highest in New York State).

According to a news release by Sheriff’s Investigators, Schmult’s latest address is listed at 7781 Adams Hill Road in Lowville, NY, but it is reported that police were unable to locate him there since May 20.

Instead, police discovered that he had been living out of his 2004 Ford Focus Station Wagon for the last few weeks.

On Wednesday, he was found at a local truck stop and was taken into police custody without any further incident.

In the weeks since moving to the area, police allege that Schmult had been going by different names, including “Robert Neb” and “Bryan.”

The Sheriff’s Office discovered that Schmult has an active warrant from the state of Oregon, however they refused extradition.

Following processing at the Public Safety Building and an arraignment, Schmult was sent to the Lewis County Jail, without bail.

Members from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Watertown City Police both assisted.
