LOWVILLE- At-least a dozen babies are expected to be born this month in Lewis County now that the Maternity Ward is up and running again.

"It gives me great pleasure to share the news that the Lewis County General Hospital Maternity Unit is open and ready to care for moms and their babies," said Lewis County Health System CEO Gerald R. Cayer.

You might remember how the unit had to be shut down in September of 2021 amidst of controversy over staff members refusing the COVID-19 vaccine and ultimately resigning.

However, when officials gathered and cut the ribbon last fall for the newly constructed surgical pavilion, Mr. Cayer revealed a welcomed announcement that the maternity ward would be re-opening come late March.

"We are the only hospital in Lewis County, so reopening the maternity service is important for our community." Mr. Cayer emphasized.

"It was a collective effort by the nursing team, nursing leadership, ancillary and support departments, and the medical staff, who were vital to re-establishing the Maternity service. Additionally, the support of the Lewis County Health System Board of Managers, the Lewis County Board of Legislators, and the County Administrative Leadership was critically important."

The first baby was already delivered in March when the ward re-opened for service.
