Lewis County resident charged with identity theft for allegedly using benefit card that did not belong to them

LOWVILLE- A local resident from the North Country is accused of utilizing a benefit card that did not belong to her via using someone else’s identity.

Carol L. Mecca, 50, of Croghan, NY was arrested on Sunday the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office for a misdemeanor charge of identity theft in the third-degree.

The arrest stems from a complaint, which was passed down from Department of Social Services for further investigation.

Police officials say the incident in question allegedly occurred in January, where Mecca reportedly assumed the identity of another person by using a benefit card that did not belong to her.

Specifically, Mecca is accused of obtaining goods and services that she was not entitled to.

Following an arraignment in Watson Town CAP Court, Mecca was released on her own recognizance.
