Nearly $10 million in grant funding will be split up between Boonville and three Lewis County communities for sidewalk fixes
LEWIS & ONEIDA COUNTIES- $97 million in grant funding has been made available and secured for over 30 different communities statewide to help with projects that promote alternative, environmentally friendly modes of travel, such as walking, biking or hiking.
This includes the upgrading of sidewalks. According to a notice from the Governor’s Office, nearly $10 million will be sprinkled between Boonville, NY and three Lewis County area communities.
Specifically, $4.2 million will be utilized by the village of Boonville for an integrated system of pedestrian, bicycle, trail, and streetscape improvements.
Meanwhile, another $5.5 million will go to Lewis County for the construction or reconstruction of sidewalks in the communities of Beaver Falls, Port Leyden and Turin.
“I am proud to have paved the way for these tremendous investments in greenways, biking and walking paths, and expanded transportation infrastructure to keep New York rolling to a cleaner, healthier, and more accessible future," said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY).
"With $97.1 million going directly into community-led transportation projects, we are cutting emissions, improving safety, and building a more connected New York State," said U.S. Senator Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).
According to Governor Hochul’s office, this funding will support initiatives that improve access to the transportation system for all users, enhance safety and facilitate the use of non-motorized modes of travel that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The awards were made available through the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and are being administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.
