UTICA-The wildfires burning in New Jersey are impacting air quality in northern and central New York, according to a report from WKTV. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is actively monitoring potential smoke effects. Statewide air quality was "moderate" today, with no health advisories issued over the weekend. For Lewis, For Oneida and Herkimer counties, the Air Quality Index map indicates that these areas fall within the "moderate" category. "Wildfire risk is highest in the spring. DEC reminds all New Yorkers of the importance of preventing wildfires to protect our environment, air quality, and first responders," the DEC posted to Facebook. The statewide ban on residential brush burning is in effect until May 14. Residents are also reminded that burning trash is prohibited year-round.
