ALBANY, NY- There’s been a development regarding abortions in the State of New York.
On Tuesday, the state’s highest court upheld a ruling requiring companies that organize health insurance plans to cover medically necessary abortions, according to the latest from the Associated Press.
Arguments presented to New York’s Court of Appeals revolved around whether the state’s criteria for religious exemptions were too vague and provided officials too much discretion to determine which companies wouldn’t have to follow the rule.
While Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, hailed the ruling as a “critical step towards protecting these fundamental freedoms,” the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany has responded to the situation by stating plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“We believe this is unconstitutional since it involves government entanglement in the fundamental rights of free exercise of faith and conscience,” a statement from the diocese read.
“The final decision on constitutionality will be by the United States Supreme Court.”
