New York’s budget deadline extended for second time as negotiations drag on

ALBANY, NY- The budget deadline for New York’s fiscal year 2024 State Budget was extended Monday, again, for another week.

This second delay means the budget could be passed as late as two-weeks and even longer, if another extension is needed. The new deadline is April 17. It was originally April 1.

Over the weekend and previously when the first extension was enacted, Governor Hochul iterated her goal is to take any necessary means to ensure a budget that helps make the state safer and more affordable.

Meanwhile amidst ongoing negotiations, which seem to be stuck again on modifying bail reform, some North Country lawmakers are criticizing the fact that New York has had a track record of passing late budgets.

"The dangers of one-party rule are many. Not only has it forced on New Yorkers some of the most dangerous, progressive policies this country has ever seen, but it creates a perfect imbalance of government where there is no appetite to compromise,” said Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R, C- Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks).

“If there was ever a more glaring example for the importance of balance at government of all levels, the New York state government is a shining example of why."

Another snag in budget negotiations revolves around affordable housing measures.

While state lawmakers will remain without pay until a budget is passed, State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli wrote a letter to Governor Hochul, urging her to ensure some 83,000 state workers receive a paycheck in time for the next payroll cycle.
