ALBANY, NY- Several programs are currently available across New York to help low income families, Veterans, Service Members and the elderly access and purchase fresh, local and healthy produce.

With over 700 Farmers Markets, farm stands and other mobile markets participating through New York’s Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and FreshConnect Checks Program, eligible recipients are encouraged to reach out to their county Office for the Aging on where and how to take advantage of these opportunities.

“Here in New York, we are lucky to be home to some of the best growers and producers in the country, and farmers’ markets are critical tools that connect producers directly to consumers, enhance our local food supply chain, and bolster the New York State agricultural industry,” said Department of Ag & Markets Commissioner Richard A. Ball.

This new initiative is part of the long standing FreshConnect Checks Program, which is administered by the Department.

It helps expand access to fresh food in underserved communities, to improve the diet of individuals in those communities and to foster economic development by supporting local producers.
