The New York State Police says to enjoy turkey during the Thanksgiving holiday, but don’t be one while you're behind the wheel.

Through Sunday, November 26, the State Police will team up with local law enforcement agencies statewide for their annual Thanksgiving crackdown on impaired and distracted driving.

According to the New York State Police, if you drive drunk or drugged, you not only put your life and the lives of others at risk, you could face arrest, jail time, and substantial fines and attorney fees.

The average drinking and driving arrest costs up to $10,000, according to the State Police.

Arrested drunk and drugged drivers face the loss of their driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of unanticipated expenses from attorney fees, fines and court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost time at work.

During last-years enforcement blitz, police managed to catch over 200 people for driving drunk and/or impaired, while also issuing over 4,700 speeding tickets and 425 citations for distracted driving.
