New York Thruway Authority warns of SMS text message scam that attempts to collect tolls

Published on March 13, 2024

Scam Alert

New York went cashless tolling in the fall of 2020, meaning drivers don’t have to deal with toll booths anymore.

Instead, a high-tech camera system now captures license plates, or an E-ZPass, and bills the registered owner.

It sounds simple and more convenient, but some lawmakers have been critical of the move, highlighting on a few issues that have blossomed along the way.

However, authorities are warning of a more recent problem that has surfaced and it involves a text message scam.

Earlier this month, the New York State Thruway Authority issued a warning that scammers are sending out text messages that suggest outstanding balances.

These texts include a link that directs users to a NY Toll Services website, which is not affiliated with Tolls by Mail NY.

Officials clarify that Tolls by Mail NY will never ask for any personal information, such as your birthday and etc.

If you receive a text message like this, authorities warn to not click on any links or provide any personal information.
