LOWVILLE- Students were dismissed Thursday afternoon in the wake of what authorities call a “swatting” incident at Lowville Academy.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office originally confirmed with us that there was a lockdown sometime shortly before 12:30 noontime on Thursday.

Students were evacuated to the bus garage, where parents were given the option to pick them up. Students could also take the bus home.

As far as Flack Broadcasting is aware from Sheriff Mike Carpinelli, there is no active threat to the community.

According to local authorities, a ‘swatting’ incident revolves around a false emergency. In other words, law enforcement are triggered to respond to a certain area, but there ends up being no legitimate threat or purpose.

According to Sheriff Carpinelli, there were other swatting calls made to schools in the area around the same general time frame.

The nature of these calls reportedly revolved around a shooting threat. Again to clarify, there is no active or ongoing threat to the school or to the public.

State Troopers and Lowville Village Police were on the scene as well.

Sheriff Carpinelli commends what he called a “tremendous” and successful collaboration between the school and local authorities for handling the situation.
