ALBANY- A report from Empire Center suggests nine of the top ten highest paid North Country area employees were in Lewis County for the 2025 – 2026 Fiscal Year.
Most of these employees are physicians and medical staff.
For the North Country region, over 8,700 employees averaged an income just shy of $48,000 – the lowest in all of the state’s regions (outside of New York City).
Nearly 180,000 employees for counties, cities, towns and villages statewide were paid a total of $12 billion for that fiscal year time frame, which comes out to an average of $67,037.
Local governments in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties paid a total of $419 million.
Only 5.2 percent of their employees were paid $100,000 or more, the smallest share of any region and compared with about one in five statewide.
