WASHINGTON, D.C. – North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik voted in favor of impeaching U.S. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday.

“His impeachment should send a clear message to the Biden Administration: it’s time to do your constitutional duty and secure our nation’s borders,” she said in a released statement from her office.

It was an extremely narrow margin, but the impeachment vote in the U.S. House of Representatives passed 214-213.

Various reports suggest that three Republicans voted in chorus with the Democrats against the impeachment. The same reports suggest that a conviction from the U.S. Senate is highly unlikely.

Despite the move, there have been several officials and Constitutional experts who have repeated numerous times that evidence, claimed by several Republican figures leading this charge, does not meet the bar for an impeachment.

Still, Stefanik says otherwise. “House Republicans delivered accountability for the American people today when we impeached Alejandro Mayorkas for his willful and systematic refusal to comply with federal immigration laws and his breach of public trust,” she said.

“Under Mayorkas’s failed leadership, every state is a border state due to Joe Biden and Mayorkas' incompetence and failed policies.”

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer says this impeachment is “another embarrassment” for House Republicans, adding the only reason for this move is for House Speaker Johnson to “further appease Donald Trump.”
