North Country man convicted in fatal DWI crash last spring sentenced in Jefferson County Court

WATERTOWN- The North Country man convicted for driving drunk and killing a passenger in a crash last spring appeared in court Monday for sentencing.

Peter Schroy will spend the next three to nine-years in prison, according to the latest from WWNY-TV.

The sentencing was handed down by Judge David Renzi in Jefferson County Court. The wreck occurred on the night of May 4, 2023 on State Route 26 in the town of Champion.

Schroy, who was 54 when the crash occurred, drove his pick-up off the road and struck several trees.

He was airlifted to a Syracuse, NY Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, his passenger, Donald Gerber, 56, was thrown from the truck and pronounced deceased.

It was reported that Schroy had a .18% BAC when the wreck occurred, which is over twice the legal limit.

In the moments prior to his sentence, Schroy read a statement before the court, iterating how “truly sorry” he is for the choices he made that night.
