ON-AIR SEGMENT: Lewis County Rail Trail perspective from Save the Lowville & Beaver River Railroad

LOWVILLE- Ever since talk around Lewis County's Rail Trail project came into light, Flack Broadcasting has shared various on-air segments from county officials, snowmobile and or ATV enthusiasts and many more, but there is another group of folks who want to have their stance seriously considered.

On Wednesday, September 16, 2026, President of the Railway Historical Society of Northern New York, Ron Trottier, and Croghan Town Historian, Laurie Holliday, joined North Country News to share why they believe the history of the railway corridor should be preserved. 

For context, Lewis County acquired the railroad bed last fall and the idea is to gain input on what to do with the corridor. There are calls for various recreational trails, including biking, walking, snowmobiling and ATV.

However, folks like Trottier, Holliday and others strongly believe the former railroad should be preserved. There are even local groups like 'Save the Lowville & Beaver River Railroad' that are proposing the sections of track, instead, be used for tourist and scenic train excursions between Lowville and Croghan, NY.
