Two raccoons test positive for Rabies in Southern Lewis County

LOWVILLE- Two Raccoons have tested positive for Rabies in Southern Lewis County, according to a notice Tuesday from the Public Health Office.

With the test results confirmed via New York’s Health Department, one Raccoon was discovered in the town of Leyden, while the other one was discovered in the town of Turin.

Public Health officials said there was no human or pet contact with these rabid raccoons.

Rabies is a very deadly disease that can be passed on to humans from infected animals via a bite or a scratch.

Authorities strongly urge to ensure your pets are kept up to date with their rabies vaccinations, as required by New York State law.

Don’t forget, Lewis County Public Health is hosting its latest rabies vaccination clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets on Wednesday, September 16, 2026 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Lewis County Fairgrounds in Lowville, NY.
