ALBANY, NY- On Thursday, April 17, 2025, New York Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush joined North Country News and provided the latest legislative update from the state capitol.
As of this publication, the FY 2026 State Budget is overdue since April 1, but the Assemblyman says a deal is very likely to be reached by as early as next week.
In the meantime, Blankenbush is supporting one of Governor Hochul's latest initiatives to include into the budget, which is more reforms to the state's discovery law.
You may remember when the latest discovery law amendments were enacted in 2019 under the Cuomo administration. The reforms were criticized by various attorney figures and members of law enforcement.
Since then, state leaders in Albany have admitted that that there have been unintended consequences from the discovery reform, specifically where there has been a notable decrease in domestic violence related convictions.
For context, the discovery forms were originally carried through on the basis of enforcing fairness.
