ON-AIR SEGMENT: Woodgate Fire Chief Anthony Sege talks latest volunteer firefighter recruitment efforts with annual RecruitNY Weekend on the horizon

WOODGATE- On Friday, April 3, 2026, Woodgate Volunteer Fire Chief, Anthony Sege, joined North Country News for the first part of our latest on-air series focusing on firefighter recruitment efforts.

For the past several years, New York State has organized an annual weekend aimed at encouraging the recruitment of local volunteer fire fighters. It is called RecruitNY and is observed every April.   

This year during the weekend of April 18 and 19, several fire departments from all over New York State will be hosting open houses, where visitors can go in and see what the volunteer fire service is all about. 

This year, only a select few fire departments directly local to our listening area will be participating in RecruitNY (see the full list here), including:

WEST CARTHAGE FIRE DEPARTMENT, 61 HIGH ST, CARTHAGE, NY 13619-1139 (Saturday, April 18).

LEE CENTER FIRE DEPARTMENT, 5643 STOKES - LEE CENTER RD, LEE CENTER, NY 13363 (Saturday and Sunday, April 18 & 19).

WOODGATE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT, 12445 NY STATE ROUTE 28, WOODGATE, NY 13494 (Sunday, April 19).
