UPDATE: State Police identify those involved in fatal garbage truck accident near Harrisville

HARRISVILLE- Authorities have identified the two people involved in Thursday's garbage truck wreck in the far northeastern part of Lewis County.

It happened late in the afternoon on State Route 3, near the Harrisville, NY area. As of this report, authorities have confirmed that two people were involved with the incident.

From the State Police: "A 2004 International garbage truck, operated by Shawn R. Cummins, age 35 from Carthage, NY was traveling south on State Route 3 when he lost control after rear right tire failure. The truck crosses the northbound lane of travel, exits the roadway on the eastern shoulder, and overturns on the driver’s side. Cummins was found unconscious without a pulse and transported to Carthage Area Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

A 17-year-old passenger, Ian J. Pierce from Natural Bridge, NY sustained back injuries and was transported to Carthage Area Hospital for further evaluation."

A part of Route 3 was shut-down until the early hours Friday.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Natural Bridge Fire and Ambulance, and Harrisville Fire Department.
