Pet had encounter with rabid animal in town of Leyden, Lewis County Public Health says

LEWIS COUNTY- The Public Health Office has confirmed a recent domestic animal exposure to a rabid animal in the town of Leyden.

Results from the New York Health Department suggest a domesticated animal, which was vaccinated, had contact with a rabid raccoon.

The announcement was revealed on Wednesday. Health officials said the pet received a rabies booster. There were no human exposures reported.

Public Health officials remind residents that rabies is a very deadly disease than can be transmitted from infected animals to humans, especially through a bite or a scratch.

As usual, a wide array of rabies vaccination clinics are going to be scheduled for the month of May throughout Lewis County (stay tuned for more details).
