It is nearly time for the kids to go back to school; a true sign that fall is on the horizon.

As families prepare to send their children and teenagers back to the classroom, local authorities are anticipating that there will be a wave of back to school photographs shared to numerous social media platforms all across the state.

Families sharing first day or back to school images to social media has become a very common trend and as exciting as it may be to document such a special occasion, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office warns to be very careful what information you share to social media accounts.

“As you document your child's First Day of School with signs, remember to prioritize safety and be sure not to expose too much of your child's information on social media,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a released statement.

No matter your privacy setting or friends, the Sheriff’s Office suggests that it’s best to keep any and all personal information to a minimum.

Remove or block out personal information to help keep your child safe (much of this information may also be part of security questions):

  • Child’s grade.
  • Child’s age.
  • School name/logo.
  • Teacher’s name.
  • Interests.
  • Avoid location tags.
  • Graduating class.
  • School bus number.
  • Front door/front porch pictures that show house number.

On behalf of the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Maciol wishes all local students a very safe and successful 2024-2025 school year.
