LEWIS COUNTY- A grass fire was contained and extinguished quickly over the weekend in Southern Lewis County.
It happened shortly after 9:00 a.m. Saturday on the Lyonsdale Road, right along the National Grid power lines.
Port Leyden Fire Department was the primary responder.
According to officials, the fire was quickly extinguished, thanks to a quick response from emergency personnel, including members of National Grid and New York State DEC Forest Rangers.
At press time, details remained limited and no cause was listed by Port Leyden Fire Department.
With that said, despite this latest round of winter weather, officials from the DEC are advising residents locally and statewide to be extra vigilant for wildfires.
Starting on March 16, New York State will officially be under a statewide burn-ban, which prohibits residential brush burning to help reduce the risk of spreading wildfires when there is little to no snowpack, but before the foliage turns green.
