Jebs Flooding Aftermath July 2024

LOWVILLE- It’s no surprise, but the month of July was a record breaker for the village of Lowville, NY for when it comes to rainfall.

Data retrieved from the Northeast Regional Climate Center suggests the village had its wettest month on record since 1893.

A jaw dropping 10.6” of rain was measured in Lowville as of July 30, with more than half of that total falling all at once on July 10, a day locals will never forget.

For comparison, official numbers from Rick Beyer, who resides on top of the Rector Road Hill (a few miles west of Lowville) and keeps track of local weather data, recorded 11.55” of rain for the month of July.

During the day of the flood, Rick measured 6.24” of rain. For even more context, Mr. Beyer measured 9.55” of rain for the month of June and 3.48” for May.

If you add those numbers together, it means nearly 25-inches of rain has fallen over the past three-months on the eastern side of Tug Hill.

Just yesterday, we reported that the Governor’s Office has allotted $11 million in emergency assistance funding for homeowners and municipalities impacted by the severe storms in July, including a tornado that hit the city of Rome, NY.
