Public Health confirms rabid Raccoon in town of Martinsburg

LOWVILLE- A Raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Lewis County.

According to results from the New York Health Department, this Raccoon, which was located in the town of Martinsburg, tested positive for rabies.

It is reported that two vaccinated pets had contact with the raccoon. Both of them required a rabies booster.

No human exposures were reported.

The Public Health Office reminds North Country area folks that rabies is a very serious and deadly disease, which affects the central nervous system of one’s body.

Rabies can be easily transmitted from an infected animal to a human via a bite or a scratch.

In addition, public health officials strongly recommend if you have any pets that they stay indoors, helping to minimize any contact with potentially rabid animals.
