Public Health officials remind Lewis County residents of annual rabies bait drop in August

Rabies Vaccine Baits CDC

LOWVILLE- Lewis County Public Health is reminding residents that the annual rabies bait drops will be taking place soon throughout the county.

For the past several years, officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Wildlife Services have spread numerous rabies vaccination baits throughout several townships.

The aim is to trick a wild animal into eating the bait, thus giving them a vaccination. If your pet happens to find and eat one of them, public health officials say not to worry; although a pet that consumes several of these baits will likely be subject to upset stomachs.

If you find one of these baits, authorities encourage to leave it be. You can handle it with proper gloves or a towel and toss it into the woods if you happen to find one out in the wide open.

These baits will be dropped from low flying airplanes.
