Remains of human body found in wake of Herkimer County structure fire

RUSSIA- An investigation is underway in Herkimer County after emergency responders discovered human remains in a structure fire.

Sometime shortly before 8:00 a.m. Monday, Poland, Newport and Barneveld Fire Departments were all dispatched to 952 Rose Valley Road in the town of Russia.

Upon arrival, the first wave of firefighters discovered a fully involved structure fire – a two-story cabin, dispatchers said.

During overhaul operations, emergency responders discovered the remains of a human body.

Members from the New York State Police and New York State Fire are both working together to help determine the origin and cause of this blaze.

As of this report, a victim identity is being withheld, pending a forensic confirmation and notification of proper family members.
