REPORT: Plans to shake up High School graduation requirements in New York moving forward

ALBANY, NY- New York State is making strides forward to shake up the requirements for high school students to graduate.

According to state government figures, the standard concept of passing a certain number of Regents exams will be no more.

Starting with students graduating in 2028, the state is planning to offer a single state high school diploma.

Regents exams will still exist, but the idea of having students pass a certain number of them to graduate will be done away with.

Rather, under the new proposed system, students in New York would have the options to demonstrate their knowledge through multiple avenues, including skills needed for either college, career and civic duties.

The new system is aimed to be implemented fully for students entering the ninth grade come the 2029 – 2030 school year.

It is reported that these new graduation requirements will be phased in for students currently in high school.
