SYRACUSE, NY- A $100 million lawsuit settlement has been reached between the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse and people who claim they were victims of sexual abuse.
This development blossoms amid ongoing bankruptcy proceedings within the diocese, according to the latest from the Associated Press.
Similar lawsuits are haunting other Catholic Dioceses statewide, primarily because New York temporarily suspended the statute of limitations to give people claiming to be victims of childhood sexual abuse the ability to pursue allegations that may be as old as decades ago.
The Syracuse Diocese says there are over 400 claims which involve 387 people, with a select few filing multiple claims.
Although the settlement has been agreed, it still remains subject to a creditor vote and court approval.
It’s reported that 6 out of 8 New York Dioceses have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
