Scam Alert

JEFFERSON COUNTY- Folks here in the North Country are being warned to beware of one of the latest scams that have surfaced locally.

The Watertown City Police Department has put out a notice warning the public to be mindful of any text messages that appear to originate from the Northern Credit Union.

Investigators have determined that these scammers are spoofing phone numbers from Northern Credit Union and sending text messages to their victims asking them to confirm transactions.

Here is the kicker: if a recipient responds to these texts, they receive a follow up message from the scammer and a phone call from a number that is disguised from Northern Credit Union.

During this follow up call, police say the scammers have been asking their victims for personal information, including account usernames.

Next, the scammers will text an authorization code to the victim’s phone and attempt to obtain the code from the user, which allows them to access their accounts and finances.

Finally, the scammers will initiate a transaction and swipe money from the victim’s account.

For anyone who may have fallen for this scam, but have yet to file a report, local authorities encourage that they do so with their local police department.
