WASHINGTON, D.C. – Top officials from the nation's Capital are still buzzing about President Joe Biden in the aftermath of his announcement Sunday that he will no longer continue his re-election campaign.

There have been several reactions to this development, including from Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, a Democrat (NY). “Joe, today shows you are a true patriot and great American,” the Senator said in a released statement.

Meanwhile, North Country Congresswoman wasted no time chiming in with her reaction. "If Joe Biden can’t run for re-election, he is unable and unfit to serve as President of the United States,” she claimed Sunday.

Also, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) saluted the President’s decision to step down. “I’m so proud of everything we’ve accomplished together – from fighting for health care for Veterans exposed to burn pits, to passing historic legislation making gun trafficking a federal crime, to making investments in jobs and infrastructure across New York,” she said.

Following the President’s announcement, he clarified his endorsement for current Vice President, Kamala Harris.

For context, former U.S. President Donald Trump took over 64% of the vote in Herkimer County when he won in 2016, while also winning Jefferson County with 58% of the vote; Lewis County with 67% of the vote and Oneida County with 57% of the vote.

Meanwhile in 2020, Trump managed to win all four counties local to our region again, despite losing the election to his Democratic challenger and current President, Joe Biden.

When Biden ran in 2020, he took 41% of the vote in Oneida County, the highest tally local to our listening area.

In Herkimer County, Biden took 33% of the vote; almost 40% in Jefferson County and nearly 30% in Lewis County.
