ALBANY, NY- Our clocks have been turned back an hour statewide, signaling the end of daylights savings time.
Changing our clocks in the spring and fall has been a New York tradition since the enactment of the Uniform Time Act of 1966. However, recent studies suggest that nearly two-thirds of Americans want to establish daylight savings time, permanently, and leave the clocks alone.
"I believe that making daylight saving time permanent will benefit our communities, state and geographic region,” said New York State Senator Joe Griffo (R-C-I-ROIME).
He joins Democratic Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara (D-Rotterdam) in the push for permanent daylight savings time.
"Studies and research indicate that are many benefits to permanent daylight saving time, including improving health, enhancing public safety, reducing accidents and providing a needed boost for our economy. It's time for the Legislature to act on this bill."
A federal legislative package, titled the ‘Sunshine Protection Act of 2021,” first introduced and passed through the U.S. Senate, still has to work its way through the House of Representatives and be signed by the President. If that occurs, we would move our clocks forward once more in the spring and never move them back again.
All states except for Hawaii and Arizona, as well as several U.S. territories, follow daylight saving time, according to Griffo’s Office.
