UTICA- Another toll hike for New York’s Thruway (I-90 & I-87) is on the table and one state lawmaker representing the North Country says he is against it.
"I expressed opposition to the Thruway Authority's decision to raise tolls before, and I encourage others to do the same," Senator Joe Griffo (R-C-ROME) said.
For E-Z Pass holders, tolls will increase by 5%, while non-E-Z Pass drivers will see a 75% spike. If approved, the hikes would commence in 2024.
"This proposal will further burden New Yorkers and visitors to our state at a time when many are struggling due to inflation and other economic challenges. The legislative majorities and the governor recently agreed to and passed a $229 billion budget that included funding directed to the MTA and other authorities. They should have also considered dedicating revenue to alleviate the need for toll increases," Griffo added.
Griffo has been an outspoken critic against cashless tolling and toll increases.
Recently, he claims to have been in contact with State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, asking his office to consider an audit of the state's cashless tolling initiative to ensure that it is operating properly and that safeguards are in place to protect the traveling public.
