Control has been restored at Riverview Correctional Facility near Ogdensburg, NY in the wake of an emergency incident early Thursday.
This update is according to the latest from WWNY-TV.
According to an issued statement from the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, officials acknowledged a situation that arose at Riverview, where staff members ultimately vacated their posts and left the dorms unsupervised.
However, a separate statement from the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association suggests that inmates became unruly sometime after midnight Thursday and ultimately took over several dorms, hence why the officers exited in fear of their own safety (***see WWNY’s latest coverage to see the statements in full).
The DOCCS admitted that a Correctional Emergency Response Team was deployed from Albany, NY, along with another CERT from Riverview, including several members who stepped away from the picket line, the DOCCS Office of Special Investigations and New York State Police.
The statement from DOCCS indicates that the efforts put forth by the CERT and others were “instrumental” in restoring order.
According to a retired corrections officer, who provided us with some additional context and wished to be unnamed, the use of emergency response units are only utilized when it is absolutely necessary to regain control of a unit or an entire facility.
According to information from 7-News, prison staff could hear the inmates breaking glass and damaging the dorm areas.
It was then when they called for help once they vacated the visitors’ area and hunkered down in the administrative area.
We have heard separate claims regarding another incident in Malone, though have yet to receive any sort of confirmation for whatever the situation may be up that way.
