New York’s Labor Department has released the unemployment numbers for April.
Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The State's area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.

Each region’s and/or county’s statistics are compared to that from the year before. Herkimer County’s rating dropped from 3.8 down to 3.2%.
Meanwhile, Jefferson County, including Watertown and Fort Drum, witnessed a decrease from 4 down to 3.3%.
Unemployment rates in Lewis County fell from 4.2 down to 3.7%.
Finally, in Oneida County, unemployment rates dropped from 3.3 to 2.7%, while the Utica-Rome regions witnessed a similar downtrend from 3.4 to 2.8%.
To recap last week's statewide press release, New York State's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 4.1% in March to 4.0% in April 2023.
