WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $78 billion tax package Wednesday evening, which if signed into law, would include things like expanding the child tax credit and restoring a number of business tax benefits.

The final tally was 357 to 70, where 188 Democrats and 169 Republicans voted in favor, while 23 Democrats and 47 Republicans said nay.

Next, the bill will be negotiated within the U.S. Senate.

Known as the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) says she is proud to have voted for this bill. “This bipartisan legislation bolsters the financial security of working families, boosts American competitiveness, and cuts wasteful spending by eliminating COVID-era fraud-ridden programs and saving the American taxpayer billions of dollars,” she said.

Read her full statement below:

“Today, I proudly voted to extend President Trump’s pro-growth policies in a critical tax reform package that delivers conservative wins for working communities in Upstate New York, the North Country, and nationwide. This bipartisan legislation bolsters the financial security of working families, boosts American competitiveness, and cuts wasteful spending by eliminating COVID-era fraud-ridden programs and saving the American taxpayer billions of dollars. I applaud Chairman Jason Smith for getting this package across the finish line and delivering results for the American taxpayer.”

If ultimately sent to the President’s Desk for a final signature, the deal would offer a larger credit in the first year to low income families of roughly 16-million children.

Furthermore, the proposal would restore several business tax credits that recently ended, or have just begun to phase-out, and were originally part of the Republicans’ 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
