Town of Webb’s new Police K-9 Dibbs marks first month on the job

OLD FORGE- The Town of Webb Police Department says its brand-new K-9 “Dibbs” has settled in nicely now being on the job officially for a month, but more rigorous training awaits the eager pup.

With the addition of Dibbs, the Town of Webb Police Department says they will be able to expand their capabilities both in the community and across the surrounding Adirondack wilderness.

Dibbs is partnered with Officer Jace Janczewski, who helped bring the idea of establishing a K-9 program to the department.

What began as a goal for Janczewski has now developed into a new resource for the Town of Webb and neighboring communities.

“I always wanted to be a handler,” Janczewski said. “I brought the idea to Chief Mulcahy, who was all for it, and we made it happen.”

Dibbs has already completed eight weeks of explosive-detection training and is certified to recognize 12 different explosive odors. That capability will allow the department to assist with security at public events and other situations in which an explosives-detection K-9 may be needed.

His training is far from finished. In fact, Dibbs is scheduled to return to school this fall for additional instruction in tracking and patrol work.

The name Dibbs carries a special meaning within the department and the community. Dibbs was named in honor of former Town of Webb Police Chief Robert Dibble, recognizing his years of service to the community.

Dibble's stepson, Adam Court, said the tribute was particularly meaningful because of his stepfather's connection to both the Town of Webb and animals.

“It’s a true honor; our stepdad really loved the community, and he really loved animals,” Court said. “It makes us really proud that they took the time to recognize him and his service to the community.”

For Janczewski, Dibbs is more than a new assignment. The two will work and train together daily, forming the partnership that is at the heart of any successful police K-9 team.

Though Dibbs has yet to crack a case yet as of this publication, he has been out and about at various community events, including for the Town of Webb 'Adventure Day Kamp Kids.'
