ONEIDA COUNTY- Numerous prison guards in connection to the death of an inmate at Mid-State Correctional Facility last month have been criminally indicted.

This development is according to the Associated Press.

Though the Governor’s Office did not specify exactly how many guards have been indicted for the death of Messiah Nantwi, 22, a court filing in March via the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James suggested as many as nine correctional officers are correlated to the occurrence.

A total of fifteen employees were dismissed soon following the incident, three of which were suspended without pay.

Nantwi was taken from the prison facility and to the hospital, where he died on March 1. It is not yet officially clear as to what happened, though the Governor has made remarks recently to suggest “disturbing” conduct.

Reports from the Associated Press claim that Nantwi began serving time last May, including a five-year sentence from criminally possessing a weapon in which was used in an exchange of gunfire with police.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Nantwi shot and killed two people within 24-hours in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City during the spring of 2023.

Meanwhile, the prosecution says a “noteworthy development” has come to light and has scheduled a press conference for Wednesday afternoon.

We will share anything new that develops as a result.
