UPDATE: Several details still remain unknown in Lewis County homicides case, but State Police release suspect identity who was shot and killed after firing at responding police

DIANA- There are several details that still remain unknown for the time being, but state authorities have released the latest updates concerning a pair of homicides that are currently being investigated.

As previously reported, State Police said they responded to a trespass complaint on the Alpine Road in the town of Diana late Friday afternoon after a report of someone being spotted on an security camera with what appeared to be a long gun.

While responding, Troopers said they located two separate vehicles that had been burned, with both of them containing human remains.

While Troopers established a perimeter, Victor L. Craighead, age 47, of Harrisville, NY, emerged from an address at 7654 Alpine Road and fired at police with a long gun, investigators said.

A State Trooper, who has been identified as Timothy Dovi, returned fire and struck Craighead and despite immediate aid, he was pronounced deceased.

For the time being, Trooper Dovi, who has been in active service for nearly a decade and is currently a member of the Special Response Team, remains on critical incident leave.

Multiple body-worn cameras captured the incident. The footage is not being released at this time, due to the ongoing investigation, State Police declared on Monday.

Autopsies for the deceased homicide victims were scheduled for Monday at the Broome County Medical Examiner’s Office in Binghamton, NY. Positive identification of the deceased individuals is pending confirmation by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

This investigation remains ongoing and the State Police emphasizes that it could be several weeks before any new developments come to light.
