DENMARK- A North Country resident is faced with a felony vehicular assault charge after police investigated a DWI related incident between a vehicle and a dirt bike Monday evening in Lewis County, authorities say.

Darren M. Ashcroft, 57, of Carthage, NY was arrested Monday evening by the New York State Police (Watertown). Ashcroft is formally charged with one felony count of vehicular assault in the second-degree, along with DWI (first offense) and operating a motor vehicle (w/a .08 of 1% or more BAC).

According to Troopers, Ashcroft was traveling south on Plank Road in the town of Denmark when he attempted to pass a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling in the same direction.

Due to oncoming traffic, Ashcroft wasn’t able to pass completely so he turned back into the driving lane, rear-ending the dirt bike.

The operator of the 2007 Kawasaki was Trean E. Arseneau, 16, from Copenhagen, NY. He was transported via helicopter to Upstate Hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries.

Ashcroft allegedly showed signs of intoxication and was subsequently arrested for DWI.

He was taken in for processing and recorded a .13% BAC, Troopers said.

Members from the Sheriff’s Office, Rutland Fire Department, Search & Rescue and Lifenet Helicopter all responded.
